Big games to close the season, playoff upsets, Warriors hit double digits in league titles, round one of the world playoffs, predictions, and a look at Season 98! Welcome to the Polarbears Weekly Recap!
The regular season of Season 97 has come to a close. The league playoffs and the first round of the world playoffs are in the books, and we have already seen several upsets and fun games to watch. But before we get into all of that, lets take a quick look at notable games to wrap up the regular season.
The Cincinnati Reds visited Houston to face off against the Houston Astronauts in a thriller. Down 5-2 going into the sixth, the Reds scored 4 and then 5 in the seventh to take a 12-10 lead. The Astronauts attempted to make a comeback in the eighth, but were unable to muster a firm opposition as Jeremiah Parra shut them down to win the game 13-10. Clarence Prado got the win, Trevon Overby got the loss, and Parra got the save. 3B Nathan Rosenburg had the game of his life hitting 5-5 with 4 RBIs. Meanwhile, in the battle of the Polar Bears, the Anchorage polarbears went to Canada to take on the Winnipeg polar bears. Anchorage won the game 7-2 with the help of home runs by SS Rodolfo Mora, C Freddy Lindsay, and 3B Matthew Brantley. However, the highlight of the game was from Anchorage's pitcher, Rodney Connor, who pitched all 9 innings allowing just 5 hits and 2 runs, but striking out a whopping 15 batters.
Round one of the playoffs were action packed. After being shutdown in Game 1, the Boston Red Sox 1 won the next two games easily against bobssecondteam. Meanwhile, the competitive Beta Compass saw the defending champion Eugene Spitters barely edge past Kansas City MONARCHS. The Philadelphia FISH TOWN and the Sumner SLO Pitch were locked in constant shootouts, with a combined 70 runs scored in the three game set won by the FISH TOWN. In Copper Spring, somehow my second team I forgot about, the New York New Asgardians, were swept by the Las Vegas Aces. The St. Johns Codfish upset the Anchorage Knights in a sweep, with Knights 3B Fidele Segura hitting 2 home runs with 6 RBI in Game 1. In Ocean Star, the Daytona Daytona 500 upset the Anchorage polarbears, holding the high scoring offense to two runs the whole series, both scored in Game 2.
The second round of the playoffs were even more action packed. The Detroit Tigers were blown out by the Boston Red Sox 1 in Game 1 of their series, but were able to comeback and hold Boston under wraps to win the series in three games. The same thing happened in Alta Canyon, as the Furlong Tartans obliterated the New York Mets in Game 1, but the Mets struck back in the next two games to advance. In Bermuda Square, the Oakland Athletics blew past the Akron Beckoned in a sweep, scoring twenty runs in the series. Both series in Beta Compass went down to the wire, as the Spokane Warriors took down the Defending Champion Eugene Spitters in three close games, and the Erie Spartans and Philadelphia FISH TOWN went at it in 3 games, ending with a Spartans blowout. The Cincinnati Reds obliterated the Ontario Lightning with 10-6 and 19-4 wins. The San Diego Bombers and the Canberra Cranberries after each team blew out the other. The Bombers won on a walk off 3-run home run from Jamal Nagel. The Milwaukee Badgers upset the Peoria Destroyers in a 7-5 victory in Game 3.
The League Championships were treats to watch, with exciting games happening. The Detroit Tigers were swept by the Fort Worth Horned Frogs as they won the Alpha Ruby title on 3-1 and 8-7 victories. The Tacoma Nighthawks and New York Mets had a Game 3 thriller after 2 close games split the series. Tacoma took the lead in the eighth and closer Alfonso Gallagher was able to secure the win for the Nighthawks. The San Diego Giants swept the New York Bombers with 11-3 and 6-5 wins, And the Oakland Athletics did the same to the Chicago WINNERS with 6-4 and 12-11 victories. The Spokane Warriors won their tenth league title with 9-4 and 10-5 blowouts of the Erie Spartans, as my father (and Warriors owner) looks to get rings for his left hand (he puts league titles on his toes). The Las Vegas Aces swept the Atlanta PLAYBOYS to take the cake with 4-3 and 9-5 dubs. The Cincinnati Reds swept the San Diego Bombers 9-7 and 4-0 as they make their 18th world playoff appearance. The Dallas Grease Lightning beat the Hartford HTFD_Yankees 8-7 and 4-1 to take the gold in Desert Gold. The St. Johns Codfish beat Atlanta THE DUKES 8-4 and 12-10. The San Juan Solar Bears (they mocking my name :p) beat a bunch of numbers 11-1 and 9-4. The New Orleans Hot Rods and Providence Franzes took 3 games to settle their dispute over the Ocean Star champ, but the Hot Rods eventually won out after a game three thriller. The Newark Tigers beat the Boston Yoelll in three games. The St. Johns Deadly Sins swept Allentown The Queen City 9-5 and 15-4. The Kansas City Flying Squirrels beat the jimmies in three games, holding off a late comeback to win 9-6 in Game three.
The first games of the world playoffs were great. The Cincinnati Reds beat the Millwauke Badgers 9-2 as Luciano Kaiser pitched a complete game where he allowed only 4 hits and struck out 10. Tanner Zink was lit up for 9 runs as he received the loss. The Dallas Grease Lightning beat the St. Johns Codfish 3-0, as Charo Cisneros pitched 7 shutout innings to get the W. Kane Carmen got the loss. The Fort Worth Horned Frogs edged past the St. Johns Deadly Sins to win 9-8. Juvan Zuniga had to hold off a comeback to advance Fort Worth, as Leonel Lucas got the win and Kurtis Sweet got the loss. The Kansas City Flying Squirrels went back to steamroll form as they beat the Oakland Athletics 12-6. CF Frankie Rushing went 4-5 with 5 RBI to help propel the Squirrels to victory. Elliot Sperry got the win and Emanuel Maurer got the loss. The wildcard winner Seattle Cyclones beat the Tacoma Nighthawks 10-0 combined for a 3 hit shutout, led by Brennen Sheets, who got the win. Antonio Thacker got the loss. The New York Bombers beat the Las Vegas Aces thanks to a 2-run home run by LF Frasco Holguin. Efren Cody got the win and Natal Maestas got the loss. The Newark Tigers stopped a late comeback by the Spokane Warriors to win 9-8, with Carlomago Paez getting the win, Honoratto Cotto getting the Save, and Gerad Aragon getting the loss. Finally, in a pitching showdown in San Juan, the New Orleans Hot Rods beat the San Juan Solar Bears 2-1 thanks to a 2-run shot by LF Onofre Urena. Urbano Poseda got the win and Stuart Demers got the loss.
In the World Quarterfinals, we had several upsets. The New York Bombers upset the Kansas City Flying Squirrels 7-4. The Bombers took a 2-0 lead from back to back home runs from 3B Ray Huey and CF Danilo Roldan and never gave up the lead. Adam Chesser got the win, Chaim Nemeth got his first loss of the season, and Darrius Roberge got the save. The Seattle Cyclones remained the dark horse they are and beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4. With the Reds leading 2-1 going into the sixth, 3B Quincy Macias tied it up with a sac fly and 2B Mariano Lea hit a 2-run home run to take the lead. Faron Esquivel got the win, Isaac Barkley the loss, and Feo Sanabria got the save. The Dallas Grease Lightning pushed on the accelerator and never let up in a 9-1 defeat of the New Orleans Hot Rods, on the heels of LF Jonas Porras, who went 3-4 with a home run and a double with 3 RBI, and 2B Franco Ramos, who also hit 3-4 with 2 dingers and 3 RBI. Jermaine Bowers got the win and Natal Concepion got the loss. The Newark Tigers beat the Fort Worth Horned Frogs 4-1 with the help of home runs from 3B Isias Mulligan, CF Humberto Rivera, and 1B Guadalupe Brittain. Leonel Helfin got the win, Roman Olivarez got the loss, and Honoroto Corro got the save.
In the Semis, the Seattle Cyclones tried to continue their dark horse run, but were stopped short by the Dallas Grease Lightning, losing 4-3. Dallas took a 3-2 lead into the ninth, with Gotzone Ortega looking for save number 8 on the season, but Cyclones CF Alejandro Brant had other ideas, hitting a home run to tie the game up. Seattle got a late 2 out rally going, but former polarbears P Keshawn Linville put a stop to it. Grease Lightning C Kane Furlong hit a go-ahead single in the 14th, and Keshawn Linville locked the Grease Lightning down, securing the win. Feo Sanabria got the loss for the Cyclones. Meanwhile, the New York Bombers and the Newark Tigers enjoyed a shootout reminiscent of Game 5 of the Astros-Dodgers World Series. Fans got tons of souvenirs with a whopping 13 home runs hit in the ballgame, 10 of them hit by the Bombers. Bombers LF Francisco Hologuin hit a single to walk it off in the ninth, sending the New York Bombers to the World Series. Efren Cody got the win, and Honorato Cotto got the loss.
That means the Season 97 World Series will be the New York Bombers facing off against the Dallas Grease Lightning. The Bombers are in their first World Series in their eighth season, hoping to take home ring number one, while the Dallas Grease Lightning also look to take home the gold in their second season.
I will be writing a World Series recap that will release the day after the World Series ends, until then, all the teams that are not named the Dallas Grease Lightning or New York Bombers look for Season 98. My predictions are as follows:
The Spokane Warriors will make another World Series appearance
The Anchorage polarbears will actually make a deep playoff run (wishful thinking I know)
The Kansas City Flying Squirrels will continue to steamroll opponents, en route to another World Playoff run
The Eugene Spitters, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Flying Squirrels, Chicago WINNERS, and Philadelphia FISH TOWN will have the top five offenses
Rhody will win his division again
And finally, we will see the Kansas City Royals0 make a run in the wild card, and dark horse their way into the World Playoffs and beyond.
Thank you for reading this weeks recap and I will see you after the World Series!
